▶️ Watch: Understanding Message Indicators
What Are Message Indicators?
In Stream by Sedna, message indicators are subtle but powerful visual cues that help you triage messages at a glance.
Each indicator tells you something about the message’s status - not just for you, but for your entire team. This is core to how Stream helps you prioritise faster and avoid duplicated effort.
Indicator Cheat Sheet
| Indicator | What It Means | Why It’s Helpful |
|---|---|---|
| Solid Red Line | Unread by everyone on your team | You’re the first to view - assess whether it needs wider action |
| Striped Red Line | Unread by you, but read by someone else on your team | Someone's looked already - scan to decide if you need to as well |
| Blue Ribbon | Message is being followed (by you or others) | Marked as important - for action or tracking |
| Red Comment Icon | There are unread comments on the message | You’ve missed a team update - check the message |
| No Indicator | You’ve read the message (and so may have others) | No immediate action required - move on or archive |
Why Can’t You Mark Messages Unread?
This is a deliberate design choice. Traditional email lets users reset the read status for themselves, but that breaks transparency in team environments.
Stream does things differently:
- No message is marked as read unless it’s actually opened
- Everyone sees exactly what’s been seen and by whom
- The read/unread state powers team-based triage, not personal inbox management
