Summary
Stream now displays message origin details in the Activity Panel, helping you trace replies, forwards or duplicates with one click.
When to use this feature
Use this when reviewing messages in Stream that may have been created as replies, forwards or duplicates. This view makes it easier to understand how tags are inherited and supports faster troubleshooting across complex conversations.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open the Activity Panel
From any message in Stream, open the Activity Panel using the panel icon in the upper-right corner of the message view.
Step 2: Check the Top of the Panel
At the top of the Activity Panel, you’ll now see a new entry if the message originated as a:
- Reply
- Forward
- Duplicate
This entry includes:
- A label showing how the message was created (e.g. Reply Created, Duplicate Created)
- The message ID of the originating message
- A clickable link that opens the source message directly
Step 3: Follow the Link for Full Context
Click the link to open the original message. From there, you can review:
- Where the message started
- Tags that may have been carried over
- Relevant metadata and conversation context
Note: This feature only works for messages created within Sedna. It does not trace replies or forwards made from external email clients.
Troubleshooting & Common Questions
Q: Why don’t I see the origin info on some messages?
A: This feature only works if the message was created within Sedna. External replies or messages that originate outside won’t show origin events.
Q: Can I trace multiple message hops?
A: Currently, the Activity Panel only shows the immediate origin. For deeper traceability, open the linked message and continue following the chain.
Best Practices & Tips
- Use the origin link to explain how tags were applied automatically (like by the Reply Tagger)
- If you see unexpected tags, check the source message to understand where they came from
- Include message ID references in internal audits for a clear trail of communication
