How to Use Mini Maps in Pulse
Mini Maps in Pulse let you view a vessel’s live position, course, and speed directly from the Tonnage List. This gives you instant visual confirmation without switching tools or tabs.
When to Use This Feature
Use Mini Maps when you need to quickly validate a vessel's reported position, speed, and heading - especially helpful when dealing with large or mixed-source Tonnage Lists.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open Your Tonnage List in Pulse
- Navigate to the Tonnage section in Pulse (desktop only).
- All vessels will have a dotted purple underline beneath their names – this indicates Mini Map support.
- If AIS data is available, you’ll see live vessel data.
- If no AIS match is found, a skeleton modal will display instead.
Step 2: Open a Mini Map from a Vessel or Location
You can launch a Mini Map in two ways:
Option 1 – Click on a Vessel Name
- Click on any underlined vessel name in your Tonnage List.
- A Mini Map will appear showing:
- Live vessel position
- Heading and speed
- IMO number
- Current and maximum draft
- Destination and ETA
- Signal timestamp (when AIS was last received)
- If AIS data isn’t available, a skeleton modal will appear.
Option 2 – Click on a Location under “Open Position”
- Under the Open Position subheading, click any underlined location name.
- A Mini Map will open, showing the port’s position and any nearby Custom Regions.
- Hover over a region to highlight it.
- Click “Open Region Overview” to open a full map tab where you can view, create, or edit regions.
Step 3: Interpret the Map
- The vessel icon shows the ship’s current direction.
- Use the zoom tools or your mouse scroll to adjust the map view.
- If AIS data is missing, a skeleton model will appear instead, helping you visually assess the vessel’s likely status and heading.
Troubleshooting & Common Issues
Q: Why can’t I see a Mini Map for a vessel or port?
A: A dotted underline will still appear even if AIS data is missing. In those cases, a skeleton modal will open instead of live vessel data.
Q: The map view got lost, how do I re-centre it?
A: Click the reset view button or manually zoom to reorient your view.
Q: Why do I see a skeleton view instead of vessel data?
A: The skeleton modal appears when Pulse can’t match the vessel to AIS data.
Best Practices & Tips
- Use Mini Maps as a verification tool before responding to cargo leads.
- Combine this with Stream-reported data to make confident chartering decisions.
- Avoid toggling between external AIS platforms - everything’s now inside Pulse.
