How to Create Custom Regions in Pulse
Custom Regions in Pulse let your team define geofences tailored to your market – drawn and created by Sedna on your behalf. Use them to filter, search, and track vessel or cargo activity with greater precision.
When to Use This Feature
Custom Regions are ideal for traders, brokers, or analysts who work within specific basins, corridors, or operational zones. They reduce noise and give you targeted control over how your map and data behave.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open a Location from “Open Position”
- In your Tonnage List or Cargo Workspace, look under the Open Position subheading.
- Click on any underlined port name to launch a Mini Map showing the port’s location.
Step 2: Explore Region Overlaps
- On the Mini Map, you’ll see any regions that cover or are near the port:
- Custom Regions appear in orange
- Sedna-built (default) Regions appear in purple
- Hover over a region to highlight its full shape and view its name.
Step 3: Open the Full Region Overview
- Click “Open Region Overview” to launch a new browser tab.
- This opens the full mapping and region management interface, where you can browse and view all active regions.
Step 4: View and Filter Regions
- Use the left-hand panel to explore:
- All Regions
- Default Regions (created by Sedna – purple)
- Custom Regions (created by your team – orange)
- Hover over regions to highlight them on the map.
- Use the Select All option to view overlapping or adjacent regions together.
Step 5: Request a New Custom Region
Custom Regions cannot be created directly by users in Pulse at this time.
To request a new region:
- A Super User (your organisation’s main point of contact) should email the Sedna Support team (support@sedna.com)
- Include:
- **The name and purpose of each region (Name the region clearly – e.g. West Africa Coastal, US Gulf to Europe Route, Med Clean Outbound etc)
- A description or coordinates if available (coordinates are preferred but not required)
- Your Support representative will notify you once the new Custom Regions are live in your Pulse environment.
Step 6: Use Your Custom Region in Workflow
Once saved, you can use your region to:
- Filter the Tonnage List or Cargo List
- Surface relevant activity inside that zone
- Power Stream searches or Pulse alerts
- Align your team around shared operational areas
Troubleshooting & Common Issues
Q: My Custom Region isn’t showing on the map – what now?
A: Make sure the Custom Regions filter is selected in Region Overview. Refresh the view if needed.
Q: Can I edit or delete a region?
A: Not at this time. Please contact your Customer Success Manager to request changes.
Q: Why are some regions purple and others orange?
A: Orange regions are custom-made by your team. Purple regions are standard zones built by Sedna.
Best Practices & Tips
- Use clear, descriptive names for regions to support team-wide adoption.
- Combine custom and default regions to mirror real trade routes and operating zones.
- Revisit and refine regions regularly to keep your Pulse view aligned with market changes.
